Affordable food hub opens in Huddersfield

The Bread and Butter Hub, offering weekly groceries at a fraction of high street prices, opened its doors at the Huddersfield (Crosland Moor) Seventh-day Adventist church on 17th August. This was a Community Services initiative under the leadership of Elder Edwin Baker and supported by the church.

This new hub joins the existing nine across the Kirklees area, supported by the Kirklees Council and delivered in partnership with The Bread and Butter Thing. Councillor Jo Lawson, one of Kirklees Council's representatives for the Crosland Moor Ward and an avid volunteer at the weekly hub, said, "The affordable food hub we've opened in Crosland Moor has proved really popular. It's served more than 75 families in its first week alone."

Councillor Manisha Kaushik, also representing the Crosland Moor Ward, added, "These hubs are playing a valuable role in helping residents who would otherwise struggle to afford healthy nutritious food to feed their families. Healthy eating is so important in protecting people against a range of diseases and conditions, so it's brilliant to see this project making good use of surplus healthy food while providing a valuable service to our community."

When asked, "Why the Bread and Butter Thing at the Huddersfield SDA Church?" Pastor George Hamilton responded, "Our church is dedicated to being a valuable asset to our local community rather than existing for our own benefit. One of our initiatives, The Bread and Butter Thing, is helping us connect with the community and build bridges. By doing this, we hope to show that our faith is genuine and that we are committed to caring for and loving people, just as God does. We have been thrilled to see so many from the community come to the church for the first time, and we hope this forms the beginning of lasting friendships and connections between the church family and the local community."

The Bread and Butter Thing was founded in Manchester in 2016. It works with manufacturers, retailers and the hospitality industry to redistribute surplus food to people who most need it. Its community vans regularly redistribute over 100 tonnes of food a week to over 80 community locations. To learn more about the project and sign up, visit www.breadandbutterthing.org/become-a-member.
