Hands-On Media Training Empowers Local Church Teams

A vibrant and interactive workshop designed to equip local media volunteers with the essential skills in camera operation and sound technology was hosted by the Communications and Media Department on Sunday 20th April at Camp Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Bringing together members from across the North England Conference (NEC), the day focused on enhancing both the quality and consistency of livestream and in-person church productions. Attendees took part in one of two tracks—one for camera operators and the other for sound technicians—each aimed at strengthening core technical and creative skills.

The day began with a one-hour theory session led by members of the NEC media team, covering topics such as EQ basics, balancing sound between musicians and vocalists, visual framing, and white balancing. These insights aimed to help churches raise the standard of their audiovisual output while ensuring that their media reflects the excellence and reverence of worship.

This was followed by a highly practical hour, where participants worked in small groups at stations equipped with cameras, tripods, mixers, and other gear. This hands-on experience allowed everyone to put theory into practice—experimenting, collaborating and problem-solving in real time.

Beyond the technical training, the workshop also offered space for networking and sharing. Attendees exchanged stories from their own churches, discussed the different tools and setups they use, and explored best practices for creating an effective AV ministry. Helpful resources—including a list of recommended equipment and a step-by-step livestream guide—were also shared to support churches in developing their own media ministries further.

One attendee reflected, “I’ve always felt nervous about trying new things at church, but this workshop has given me the confidence and the tools I need.”

Reflecting on the event, Pastor Joe Philpott, NEC Communication & Media Director, said, “It was inspiring to see so many passionate individuals come together for this day of learning. God has a calling for faithful, Spirit-filled media personnel, and it’s a privilege to help equip them for service.”

Workshops like these highlight the NEC’s ongoing commitment to strengthening local churches through training and support for those working behind the scenes—ensuring that the message of hope is shared clearly, beautifully, and with care.
