Windsor Street South Seventh-day Adventist Church celebrated its dedication weekend on 6-7 July 2024. The events included the symbolic burning of the mortgage, inspiring sermons, a look back at the church’s journey and joyous community fellowship, all under the theme "But for the Goodness of God."
Windsor Street South Seventh-day Adventist Church in Birmingham celebrated a momentous milestone on Sabbath 6th and Sunday 7th July 2024, as it officially dedicated its building to God. Themed “But for the Goodness of God,” the weekend marked a triumphant chapter in the church’s history, highlighting its journey of faith.
The Burning of the Mortgage
The weekend began with the symbolic burning of the mortgage, a powerful testament to God’s provision and the commitment of the congregation. At 9:00 am on Sabbath morning, members, visitors, and pastors gathered outside the church grounds to witness this special moment. With prayers led by Pastor Swaby, the church’s resident pastor, the congregation expressed heartfelt gratitude for being debt-free—a milestone achieved solely through the goodness of God.
Sabbath Morning Worship
The Sabbath worship service commenced with vibrant singing led by the praise team, setting a jubilant tone for the day. Pastor Smith, the Personal Ministries Director of the South England Conference, facilitated a dynamic and interactive lesson review. He engaged the congregation with thought-provoking questions, focusing on nurturing relationships within the family of faith and beyond.
The service transitioned seamlessly into the divine hour, introduced by the NEC drill team and drum corps, who posted the flags with precision. Pastor Swaby welcomed the attendees, including a distinguished platform party comprising North England Conference (NEC) President Pastor Kumi, Executive Secretary Pastor Bran, Treasurer Elder Agyei-Asare, and local Councillor Yvonne Mosquito, among others.
Pastor Jackson, a former pastor of Windsor Street South and former NEC President, delivered the keynote sermon. Drawing inspiration from Ezra 6:7-8 and 15, he highlighted God’s faithfulness in providing for His people despite challenges. Pastor Jackson urged the congregation to remain steadfast in faith and proactive in service, reminding them of Christ’s promise: “I will be with you always, even unto the end of the world.”
The Dedication Ceremony
The highlight of the morning was the dedication ceremony. Elder White, chairperson of the building committee, formally handed over the church to NEC President Pastor Kumi, who led the congregation in a heartfelt pledge of dedication. Together, they consecrated the church as a space devoted to worship, community service, and the advancement of God’s kingdom.
Special musical performances, including “Goodness of God” by Clarence Parnell on the flute and a rendition of “Triumphantly the Church Will Rise” by the Travelling Singing Ministry, added depth and emotion to the service. The congregation also enjoyed a video of the mortgage-burning, which served as a poignant reminder of their journey of faith.
A Journey of Reflection and Celebration
The afternoon programme invited members and guests to reflect on the church’s remarkable journey. Through slideshows and videos, attendees revisited Windsor Street South’s humble beginnings at Edmund Road in Ward End in 1970, tracing its growth and ministry over the decades. Tributes were paid to the pioneers who laid the foundation for the church, many of whom now await the first resurrection.
The programme also featured special musical performances by soloists, groups, and the children’s choir, culminating in a meditation titled “Great is Thy Faithfulness” by Loxson McKoy.
Pastor McFarlane, a former pastor of the church, delivered a stirring charge to the members. His sermonette, titled “Not by Chance,” challenged the congregation to remain united, embody God’s perfect love, and make Windsor Street South a house of prayer for all people. He emphasised that each member has a role in advancing God’s mission with urgency, saying, “We must all play our part with our time, talent, and money to carry forward God’s work in our community.”
A Joyous Sunday Fun Day
The weekend culminated in a lively fun day on Sunday, where members, visitors, and pastors gathered for fellowship and entertainment. Despite occasional rain showers, the atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter. Activities included board games, dominoes, floor games, and FIFA tournaments. Younger attendees delighted in a bouncy castle, while others marvelled at the Pathfinders’ fancy drilling displays.
The culinary offerings were another highlight, with an array of dishes catering to every palate. Authentic Trini doubles and homemade ice cream churned in a traditional pail added a special touch to the festivities.
The fun day encapsulated the spirit of the dedication weekend—celebrating God’s goodness, fostering unity, and building lasting memories within the church family.
A Legacy of Faith and Service
The Windsor Street South dedication weekend was more than a celebration of a building—it was a testament to God’s unwavering faithfulness and the resilience of His people. From the symbolic burning of the mortgage to the inspiring sermons and joyful fellowship, the events underscored the church’s commitment to being a beacon of hope and light in its community.
As Pastor Jackson reminded the congregation, God may use anyone to complete His master plan for His church, but the task of spreading His Word is entrusted solely to His people. Windsor Street South now embarks on a new chapter, fully dedicated to fulfilling that mission, “But for the Goodness of God.”
