GDPR in a nutshell – General Data Protection Regulation - what is it all about?

You may be aware of the impending General Data Protection Regulation, commonly referred to as GDPR, which will replace the current Data Protection Act. This Regulation comes into force on 25thMay 2018.

What’s really important about GDPR is that it makes sure that organisations within the European Union including churches have stronger data and privacy rules when it comes to protecting personal data. We, thereby, are under the obligation to explain clearly to you as to why we are collecting, holding and processing your personal data and how we intend to use it.

The reality of GDPR for us as a Church Body

It’s the first morning of your church’s Vacation Bible School. Volunteers are making last minute preparations; parents and children are starting to walk through the door. Excitement is rising in the room. You’re ready with your registration sheet to take names, addresses, phone numbers and dietary information so you can keep in contact with the family.

Or perhaps you’re the Church Clerk, looking through the list of church members, updating addresses and phone numbers, in an open environment.

Does this sound familiar?

The Preparation

At the North England Conference (“NEC”) and at the church where you attend, we continue to ensure our existing data protection processes and procedures are robust in securing and capturing of personal data. We can assure you that we only collect the personal data that we need in order to fulfil any agreement that we have entered into with you unless we consider that we need to use your personal data for another reason that remains compliant with GDPR and is compatible with the original purpose. If we need to use your personal information for an unrelated purpose, we will notify you and explain why, including the legitimate or legal basis, which allows us to do so.

Shortly, you should receive a letter from the church you attend, explaining in more detail our obligation and your rights under GDPR.

Please continue to look out for regular updates on our progress in preparing for GDPR on the NEC website, via the NEC Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.  In the meantime, should you have any questions about GDPR and what this means to you as a member, visitor, friend of our Church family, please email gdpr@necadventist.org.uk
