Friday 8th March marked International Women's Day, an occasion celebrated worldwide to honour the achievements and address the challenges faced by women. In Burton, the significance of this day was underscored by SARAC's first International Women's Day Award and Presentation Day. SARAC, an acronym for Sexual Abuse Rape Advice Centre, offers support to individuals in and around Burton, and recognised the contributions of several women within the community. Among the six nominees was Zena Elcock from the Burton upon Trent Seventh-day Adventist Church, acknowledged in the category of "Unsung Hero."

Sis Elcock has been a devoted member of the Burton church for many years. At a time when the church was struggling with low attendance and could not afford to rent a space for worship, she generously opened her home to the congregation. This act of kindness was instrumental in keeping the church community together. Today, the church thrives, attracting Adventist members and individuals from the local community, thanks in part to Sis Elcock's efforts. Her hospitality is well-known; she warmly welcomes visiting friends and newcomers into her home, offering them the delicious meals she prepares.

Additionally, within the church, Sis Elcock launched a Luncheon Club with the support of others. She has been the driving force behind its operation, which has successfully run for 12 years. Even through the challenges of lockdown, she continued to cook from home, ensuring the community remained fed.

Sis Elcock's receipt of the "Unsung Hero's" award is a testament to her enduring dedication and the impactful ways she continues to serve, despite facing health challenges. We are grateful to God for her humble commitment to the Lord’s Service and celebrate her selfless contributions to both the church and the wider community.
