The North England Conference (NEC) Youth Department organised an enriching and engaging ‘Relationship Weekend’ on the 9th and 10th February 2024. Winson Green Seventh-day Adventist Church welcomed young people from across the Conference and the five guest speakers. The event was themed ‘Seasons,’ symbolising the different stages of romantic relationships.

Pastor Micah Campbell, the NEC Youth Director, expressed his hope that the weekend would be beneficial for the youth, whether they are beginning a new relationship, single, or currently in a relationship. He also emphasised the importance of creating a space for discussing topics like intimacy, which are often considered taboo in the church setting.

The weekend began on Friday evening with a workshop titled ‘The Mask,’ presented by Andrew and Chanel Gravel. Through sharing their personal journeys, they explored the importance of total honesty in relationships. This session aimed to inspire the youth to embrace their true selves, fostering genuine connections in courtship and marriage. The Gravels stressed the importance of presenting a realistic view of relationships, rather than an idealised one.

The congregation engaged in worship through song, led by Adrian Dawati, a member of the Camp Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church. Dennis and Madara Nkanga, from the Bedford Seventh-day Adventist Church, led the Sabbath School workshop on singleness, outlining four key steps they found significant: practicing forgiveness, healing, equipping oneself with essential tools and socialising. They recommended several books to the attendees, emphasizing that 'healthy people make healthy relationships.' Naledi Ncube of Perry Beeches Seventh-day Adventist Church found the workshop particularly impactful, noting the authenticity and relevance of the presentations.

Donavin Durrant, the Teens Director for Windsor Street Seventh-day Adventist Church, spoke about the foundational role of a relationship with God in building healthy human relationships. His compelling message encouraged the youth to bring their burdens to Jesus as the first step towards healing, 'breaking your silence is the beginning of healing.'

The event also included opportunities for socialising – notably during lunch – allowing the youth to immediately apply the lessons on building connections discussed during the Sabbath School. The afternoon program featured an icebreaker led by Pastor Isaac Liburd, encouraging further discussion among the youth about desirable qualities in a partner.

Chanel and Andrew Gravel led the final workshop, focusing on the merging of lives in a relationship. They tailored their presentation to address the attendees' questions, sharing insights into intimacy before and within marriage.

The enthusiasm of the youth for practical advice on forming meaningful unions under God was evident, leading to many seeking further guidance from the speakers. This event has fostered connections that will support the youth in their relationship journeys, reflecting the diverse ‘seasons’ of their experiences.
